The globalization of porn and sex

The globalization of porn and sex has happened almost exclusively because of the internet. Never has it been so easy to view porn, make it, or distribute it in our life time. Sex sells everything from cars to hamburgers so we shouldn't be surprized that sex and porn are everywhere you look all over the world. In Europe sex and porn are even more prominent, appearing just about everywhere including on broadcast TV and in commercials.

This globalization and somewhat mainstreaming of porn has lead to many things including the emergence of childporn. When one aspect of a genre that previously was underground becomes mainstream and circluated globaly and accepted globally then other aspects of that genre, some of them which push the envelope even more as in the case of child porn, rise to the surface in a more visible way then it could have previously. Because of this new visiblity and the acceptance of more "normal" porn childporn advocates feel they can take advantage of societies new acceptance and push for their genre to be accepted with less fear of lashback from the public. Thankfully child porn is still not accepted in this country and hopefully it never will be, but because of the internet and the globalization of porn and the acceptance of more and more genre's of porn by the public as "mainstream", childporn has reared its ugly head all over the world. website that should be shut down are allowed to exsist that show sex acts with children, live video streams of child rape are shown to anyone who wants to view it. Liitle can be done about this problem of globalization as we have seen in other areas such as economic globalization, some people are hurt by economic globalization and some are helped by it, in porn its the same thing, some are hurt( the children) and some are helped ( the porn business). Globalization is here to sty, but it doesn't mean you have to like it.

Library porn

In response to http://loc8ed.com/cpblogs/Bethany_s_Cyberporn_and_Society_Blog/ I always thought it was illegal to view porn in a library in the first place. I thought it would be under some sort of public indecency act, but apparently not. The fact that they have to write a law to ban porn in public libraries is upsurd! There should have been a law already on the books for this type of thing. We are all worried in this country about the safety of our children from what they watch on TV and what they see on the internet yet we neglect to keep porn out of libraries untill now. Also people who would go to a library to view porn must have some problems or so,e suspect motive for wanting to do that. Its a place that is going to have kids at it and to want to view porn around kids strikes me as a little more than odd to say the least. In her blog Bethany mentions that she would be ok with porn in libraries if there were some sort of procedure that could be followed so no kids or anyone who did not want to view porn would be unable to see it acccidently. I dont agree with this point of view. While I have nothing against porn at all believe me, I just think porn is so invasive as it is in all ascpects of our lives that I'd like to think that we could have some places that are free of porn and the library is the perfect place to start.

Reflections on the class

I just want to say that I have enjoyed this class and am glad that I decided to take it this semester. I have learned alot about many different issues and feel that I have grown to understand porn and its effects on the world and our lives.

Before I took this class I had no idea how exstensive the sex trade business was and how many people are effected by it. I never realized how influencial the porn industry is on determining what new technologies suceed and which ones fail.What I really found interesting was the cases on obsenity and porn. I loved how the Surpreme Court tried over and over again to define porn with out any real success. I also found the origns of porn and how far it goes back to be very interesting.

In the end I would like to add that I enjoyed the class very much and thought it was taught very well. This was my first distance course and it was a pleasent experience.

Pedophilla

I saw a blog about pedophilla earlier in the week but could not find it again in order to post the url. But anyway I wanted to comment on it. It basically asked is pedophilla in anyway normal. My response is that it differs from culture to culture, society to society. In the United States if you under 17 in most states your a minor and anyone older cant have sex with you. But in other states the age of consent is younger some as low as 16, so even in our own country the laws aren't uniform. In someother countries around the world girls as young as 14 are old enough to be married. Some cultures believe that when a young women starts to menstrate that that is natures sign that she is ready to become a women and have children. They ask if nature has made it so a women of 13 or 14 can have a child then what is wrong with her having sex and having a baby, nature can't be wrong can it? The short answer is that we can not force our believes on other people of the world. For whatever reason, maybe it is our Puritian roots, girls are not of age until 17 in this country but in other places it is much younger, and I don't think it is our place to tell other countries what to do and how to act(even though our president thinks it is). We may not agree with their believes but we should respect them. What is disgusting to us is perfectly normal to others around the world and vis versa. So is pedophilla normal? I guess it just depends what you consider pedophilla and where you are in the world when you ask it.

Internet stings

It seems everyday I read in the paper about some guy who got busted trying to meet a young girl he met online to have sex with her. The internet has made everybody's life much easier in many different ways, unfortunatly it has also made the lives of child predators that much easier also. Gone are the days of these sicko's looking for kids in parks and school yards, now all they have to do is sit at home and hunt for them online. This is a huge problem. Between the lack of enforcement and the lack of child supervision by their parents, wether because they are to busy to watch their children or because they are just bad parents, has lead to child predators being able to lure children to places in order to rape them. For every person we hear who gets caught trying to meet a child to have sex with off the internet how many are not caught. How big a problem is this? It seem no one wants to find out because it is such a taboo subject and no one wants to talk about it, but we have to talk about it if we are going to do something about it. If we just ignore the problem it will only get bigger with time. ISP's must be forced to monitor their servers and report and shut down all sites with childporn on them. All chat rooms on the internet must be monitored to watch for child predators, and parents must start taking more responsibility and keep a tighter watch on their children when they are online. I was never for regulating the internet but my views are changing. I think we need regulation of the internet in some form or another. I know people fear BIG Brother watching us all the time, but the fact is that the internet is a lawless domain, it is the modern wild west, where anything goes and that must be put to an end.

Adults acting like kids

Lecture 30 was interesting. While I find the act of child porn revolting I do not think adults dressing up like children should and performing sexual acts should be illegal. As disgusting as it is no one is accutally harmed and if no one is harmed I don't think it should be a crime. Some will say that watching adults acting like children and having sex will lead some to act on this impluse and abuse a child. I don't think this is the case. If you believe that is true them you have to believe that heavy metal music can make people bring guns to school and kill their fellow classmates, that violence on TV has a direct effect on violence in our society, and that watching violent porn will lead to rape. All these statements are false. Music does not make you kill, TV does not make you rob you next door neighbor and violent porn does not lead to rape. People make their own decisions and should not be able to blame a form of media for their problems. If people act out because the TV told them too them they are either crazy or lying and if they are crazy them they would have acted out their sick fantasies any way and were just looking for an excuse. Becuase of all this I restate my believe that as disgusting as it is adults dressing up like children and having sex should not be illegal.

Porn and Nudity

Porn and nudity are not one in the same. If a person wants to be nude in public I don't see why they shouldn't be unless they are in the view of young children but even then there might not be anything wrong with it because there is nothing sexually about nudity in its self. Nudity is just the natural self, a beautiful image that should be shown with pride. If your ashamed or embarrssed by nudity alone then I feel sorry for you because you shouldn't be ashamed of your body. I believe in Cananda they have a law that alows women to be topless in public. In the United States I doubt you will see a law like that anywhere except maybe in California. We don't need laws determining what we can and can not wear in public, if you want to be nude go for it, people will let you know if they approve or not.

The punishments for child porn.

Should the punishments for child porn be as harsh as they are or should they be even harsher? Should a person who downloads child porn on his computer get as almost as much prison time as the person who creates the images? Should child pornographers get as much or prison time as a murderer or rapist?

You have to ask your self if the damage created by these images are so grevious that they merit the punishment. Does child porn hurt anyone? The answer is yes. Child porn unquestionably hurts the children involved. These children are exploited, raped, and absued. Most if not all are scarred by the act and have to live with it for the rest of their lives.

Are the people who watch child porn hurt? Most are not in any real sense unless you believe in God then I guess you believe they are going to hell. The problem is that some of these people are not going to stop at just watching child porn, some of them are going to act on their uncontrolable urge. when this happens even more children are hurt and in the process the peole who commit these acts are locked away having ruined not only their lives but also the lives of their victims.

In the end I believe that the punishment for childpronographers should be as harsh as possible and harsher then then punsihment for people who just view the material. But I also think that the punishment for the people who view the material should be very harsh also because if you can stop one person from acting on their urge to harm children that would have acted had they seen other do it then some good has been done

Obscenity

The line between what is obsecne and what is not is very thin. Everybody is different. Everybody interprets everything differently. What is obscene to one person may be completely fine to someonelse. The Miller Test and laws like it are set up to let communities determine what is obscene and what is not. It is not a perfect test but I think communities should be able to decide what is acceptable and what is not in their communites.

Freedom is what this country was built on, but not absoulte freedom. This is a represenative democracy where important decisions are decided by vote. Majority wins and the losers must obide by the outcome. If your community bans something that it determines to be obscene you have not lost the freedom to view what you wish, you just have to find it somewhere else, and with todays technologies it is not hard to find what your looking for.

Communites must be able to make decisions they deem are for the benifit of their citizens and protect the health and welfare of said citizens.

Addicted to porn?

Can one be addicted to porn or sex in general? I have heard of nyphomaniacs but what about pronomaniacs? I have heard of people who go to work and just surf porn sites or people who can’t stop calling phonesex lines. This behavior is self destructive and has caused relationships to end and jobs to be lost. But my question is, is this really an addiction or is it something else? Because if it is an addiction then it can also be a diesease and if thats the case then people can claim its not their fault and they can’t be held responsible for their actions regarding porn. This is a very tricky situation. If you call it an addiction and diesease then it has medical credibility and must be taken serisouly. But if you give it medical crediblity and say you can be addicted to porn then what can’t you be addicted to? I think it opens pandoras box and anything goes when it comes to addictions and it gives people an excuse to engage in questionable and risky behavior regardless of the consequences because they can just blame it on the diesease they claim to have. Does anyone know if their is a medical condition involving addiction to porn?
